A ureteral stent is generally smaller than a double J stent used to maintain drainage from the kidney to the bladder. A ureteral stent may be used to help a patient with a urinary obstruction such as an impacted stone in the ureter, or after ureteral surgery. An impacted stone is usually located in the kidney, but can also be located in the ureter before the ureter passes into the bladder. The ureter passes through the bladder and is usually 21-22 inches long. The American Urological Association estimates that at least 1.5 million ureteral stents are sold in the United States each year. A ureteral stent is typically used to help drain urine from the kidney when the urinary bladder is not producing urine due to an obstruction. The stent is usually inserted through the urinary tract, preferably through the ureter (sometimes through the bladder), and remains in the patient's body for a period of time which may vary from two weeks to six weeks, depending on the size of the stent, the intended use of the stent, and the condition of the patient. A typical ureteral stent is 3 cm long and made of a helical coil spring wire that is bent such that the coil in its natural state extends from the patient's urinary tract in a helical path. The spring forms bends at both ends of the stent, which aid in inserting the stent through the ureter and bladder. The ureteral stent is typically inserted through the ureter, and then outside the ureter in the urinary tract. The stent is usually made from the largest size that can be comfortably placed in the ureter, generally in the mid-lower portion of the ureter. The device can extend from the ureter to the bladder, or from the urinary tract to the bladder. The stent is then maintained in the patient's body by the spring coil extending from the stent.
